How We Started
In 1988, the Canossian Fathers took on the pastoral care of the San Pablo Apostol Parish in Magsaysay Village, Tondo, Manila. Their presence has been a beacon of hope and service for the community for almost three decades.
Inspired by the unwavering commitment of St. Magdalene of Canossa, foundress of the Canossian Sons of Charity, the Fathers and Brothers have tirelessly worked to make Jesus known and loved in the parish. Magdalene herself discovered a profound calling to share the life of Christ, particularly with those who were trapped in poverty, victimized by the self-serving interests of the affluent, and oppressed by the social challenges of her era. Her boundless dedication extended to children, youth, and women who grappled with various forms of impoverishment, encompassing economic, moral, spiritual, intellectual, and familial struggles.
The Canossian Sons of Charity, true to the charismatic tradition of their institute, stand in communion with the local Church, offering their services in the realms of evangelization and human promotion. Through their endeavors, they strive to exemplify the boundless love that has been bestowed upon them, reaching out to meet the spiritual and material needs of all they serve.
The establishment of the MaJeKaL Mission in 2018 by the parish of San Pablo Apostol, situated in the densely populated area of Tondo with over 120,000 parishioners, serves as a crucial response to the unique challenges faced by its community. This parish, located in close proximity to the pier, encompasses 16 Barangays within Zone 8 of the First District of Manila. Within this area, approximately 30,000 individuals reside in various informal settlement such as Happyland, Temporary Housing, Aroma, Tambakan, among others. Some families even call the space beneath bridges their home. The inception of this office serves as a channel to engage a wider community with shared advocacies and objectives. It signifies an extraordinary opportunity for individuals to actively participate and make a positive impact on the lives of our beneficiaries, ultimately contributing to the transformative environment we aspire to create. This endeavor fosters a collective spirit of community involvement, magnifying awareness about the program's overarching mission and specific goals. Additionally, this philanthropic endeavor aligns seamlessly with the pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals, including the eradication of poverty, the elimination of hunger, the promotion of good health and well-being, the provision of quality education, the reduction of inequalities, and the promotion of responsible consumption and production. MaJeKaL Mission aims to contribute significantly towards achieving these vital global objectives, underscoring its commitment to creating a more equitable and sustainable world for all.
To strengthen the growing social services led by the fathers in the parish, a need was identified to establish an office as the implementing arm of the Canossian congregation's foundation (Bakhita Canossa Foundation Inc).
Thus, MaJeKaL MISSION was founded in September 2023. The Philanthropic Development Office (PDO) will oversee and manage all existing parish programs and interventions, aiming to organize and institutionalize impactful, holistic solutions.
The name "MaJeKaL" embodies the mission of the fathers: to make Jesus known and loved.
The PDO efforts are not confined to a single location but are dedicated to addressing the needs of communities wherever the congregation is present, while fostering collaboration with partners and organizations worldwide.
